Finding My Way to Occupational Therapy: Happy OT Month!

occupational therapy Apr 08, 2025

Many years ago, back when I was a senior in high school, I was required to complete a Senior Project—an extensive, several-month-long deep dive into a career of interest. This project would consume me as I researched, wrote about, and volunteered in this strange-sounding profession called occupational therapy. I selected my topic at the very last minute, thanks to a random suggestion from a teacher who thought it would be a good match for me. What a strange name for a profession! I wondered, Was I going to help people get jobs? But I trusted my teacher beyond measure and turned in my topic—without knowing the first thing about occupational therapy. And I’ve never looked back.

During that project, I quickly discovered that the heart and soul of OT made it the perfect profession for me. That year, I volunteered in the burn unit of a local children’s hospital, and I can still remember the kindness of the therapist who took me in. That experience had a profound impact on me, leading to volunteer work across the broad field of OT—from supporting babies in the NICU to helping patients in rehabilitation after a stroke. One of the things I love most about OT is the wide range of ways occupational therapists help people regain independence and engage in meaningful activities.

As we celebrate Occupational Therapy Month during the month of April, I reflect on those who helped guide me during my early years. In their honor, I continue to support and mentor occupational therapists and occupational therapy assistants who are joining the ranks.

Happy Occupational Therapy Month to all the educators, caregivers, and therapists working together to give children the skills they need to thrive!
