Mindful Moments and Meaningful Routines: Surviving the Holiday Hustle

end of the year holiday Dec 09, 2025

The holidays can bring joy, excitement, and celebration. But they can also bring disruption, overstimulation, and big emotions, especially for young children. Classroom routines change, family schedules shift, and everywhere children turn, there are unfamiliar sights, sounds, and expectations. For children still developing self-regulation and coping skills, this can feel like chaos. So how do we keep things calm and connected when the world around us speeds up? It starts with slowing down.

Small Moments Matter Most

Mindful moments are not about quiet meditations or perfectly calm classrooms. They are about pausing. About noticing how a child is doing. About staying present in the little routines that offer comfort and rhythm when everything else feels unpredictable.

Consider:

  • A short song before transitions to bring focus
  • A breathing cue at the start of circle time
  • A cozy read-aloud before pick-up
  • A familiar hand game or fingerplay after lunch

These mini-rituals offer grounding points in the day. They help children feel safe, noticed, and steady, even if the calendar is packed with excitement.

Predictability is Powerful

While special activities can be magical, young children still crave routine. When you can, anchor the day with your usual schedule. If changes are unavoidable, prepare children ahead of time using visuals, stories, or simple language. Let them know what to expect and what will stay the same. Children thrive when they can anticipate what’s coming, even if it’s something fun.

End-of-Year Reflection

As the year winds down, take time to reflect. What helped your classroom feel calm and connected? What made your students light up? Where did they struggle? These observations aren’t just useful for January planning. They’re also a celebration of how far your class has come together. The holidays will come and go. But the sense of safety, joy, and trust you build during this time will last well into the new year.
